I don't know if I can call it a success just yet, but I'm going to anyways. In my last post I wrote about our upcoming attempts to change Charlie's sleeping routine. I think the song and dance once required is out the window!
Here's our new routine:
I grab his blanket, pacifier and froggy and we read a story in the rocking chair. I turn on his mobile jungle noises (he's always listened to those at night), lay him in the crib with his things and walk out. I pay attention to the clock and go in every ten minutes of crying--lay him back down, give him his pacifier and froggy, but don't pick him up. Walk back out.
I kept track of how it went...
Yesterday
morning nap: 50 min of crying (went in 5 times)...asleep!
afternoon nap: 20 min of crying (went in 2 times)....asleep!
bedtime: under 10 min of crying (didn't go in)....asleep!
Today
morning nap: 15ish min of crying (went in once)...asleep!
afternoon nap: under 2 minutes of crying (didn't go in)...asleep!
bedtime: no crying...asleep!
It has worked!!! Not only that, but his naps have been better: he sleeps longer and is happier when he wakes up. I'm thinking he was probably waking up early and couldn't fall back asleep on his own.
It might sound lame but I am so proud!

woo-hoo! you are lucky, my kids got more and more mad the longer i tried and i could never make it work. i'm a wuss. so glad it worked for you, and SO FAST! awesome. just don't try it too soon with the next baby, you'll miss the cuddling time some day. :)
It's not lame at all! Something you should be VERY proud of. You are not only helping yourself but you are helping him too. Addison has always been a great sleeper but she did have to learn it on her own in the beginning as well. We've had straight sleep from her (8 hours plus) since she was around 2 months old. Soooo worth it! Congrats on being sooo strong to endure the tears. They are hard to listen to.
I'm proud of you too! :)
Wow!
Good job charlie & mom!
That is awesome... thank you Megan, you have inspired me to do the same with Lola. Cole was so easy to put down for sleep that I just kind of took it for granted, but with Lola we pretty much do the same thing you guys had been doing for Charlie and I am getting pretty worn out:)
Great job Mom! That is a very very hard thing to do... but good sleeping patterns are such a blessing, even into adulthood!
Another excellent tip I read about is going in after they are asleep and making taking the pacifier is out of his mouth. He needs to learn to sleep without it, otherwise, he could wake up crying if it falls out! My first boy we had a VERY hard time with, but after reading a few books, the last two were so much better! Pulling out the paci was something I wouldn't have thought of!
Hooooooray for you guys! What a neat thing it is learning as parents! I swear, parenthood is the most rigorous educational course out there! You go!
