Christmas

I woke up at 5:30 to Joey crying.  I gave him a bottle, swaddled him and was on my way to bed when I heard Charlie's door open.  He was up and ready for the day!  Since Joey was still awake, it was great timing.  Charlie and I woke up daddy then went back to his room and waited for the OK to come back out.

Charlie in his new cape

Charlie was so excited to see his new play kitchen set up and all the presents under the tree!  He dove right into playing with his kitchen and going through all the play food.

 Joey and his kangaroo

We took turns opening presents.  Charlie loved the unwrapping and helped Joey open all of his presents.  Joey was so sweet and with each toy had a look saying, "this is for ME?!" on his face with each one.  He needed some new toys!

I was so excited for Tony to open his gifts this year!  He is a great gift giver and every year I'm stressed knowing he'll pick the perfect presents for me and I'll be clueless as to what to buy for him.  This year I finally figured that man out when it comes to buying presents.  I've been excited for him to open his gifts all month!

Christmas morning damage

After presents and a big Christmas morning breakfast, we got ready for church.  Our ward had a wonderful program planned and it was a great reminder as to why we celebrate Christmas.  I'm glad we were able to go to church on Christmas morning!  Charlie was exhausted and fell asleep towards the end of the meeting, slept on the way out of the building, in the car and took a 3 hour nap once he was in his bed.  Christmas morning wiped him out!

For dinner that night we had a honey-glazed turkey/ham, sweet potatoes and homemade cranberry-sausage stuffing (my aunt's recipe that we wait all year to have at Thanksgiving).  We called our families that night and it was great to hear how their Christmas day went.  We miss them!

It was a wonderful Christmas!

Merry Christmas!!!

Christmas Eve

I love Christmas Eve and this year was a fun one!  We started the day off by visiting Santa Claus.  This Santa is seriously the best I've ever seen!  Charlie and Joey loved him.  Charlie went right up to him and wanted to sit on his lap.  Joey just stared and was completely mesmerized by this man with a beard he wanted pull.

Later that day, Charlie and I made gingerbread houses.  This is one of my favorite traditions!

Charlie was much more interested in eating the goodies than using them to decorate, but he did enjoy having his own piping bag.

That night we opened up our Christmas pajamas and a movie (Tarzan) from Papa and Grandma Messer.  We brought our dinner into the family room and watched our movie while eating on a big blanket.

After the movie it was time for bed!  We put the boys down and got to work...

Until now, we had kept all the presents hidden in order to keep Charlie from unwrapping them.  It was so exciting to see all the presents under the tree!
Christmas Eve will always be the most exciting night of the year!

Charlie's Christmas Party

John David, Charlie, Connor & Danny

We've been doing our date night co-op with friends for a few months now.  We have really enjoyed Friday night date nights again!  Our night to watch the boys was this past Friday and since it was the 23rd, we had a Christmas party for the boys.

 Decorating cookies

We decorated Christmas sugar cookies, colored Christmas pictures and watched Christmas movies.  It was a lot of fun!

It has been fun watching these boys get to know each other.  In the beginning, they would play on their own, but now they run around making up games together.  Watching Charlie in this setting has been a lot of fun.  He has a great time and gets a little hyper...

Scripture Ice Cream

Before Joey was born, I told Tony we needed to start reading scriptures together as a family.  We decided  before family prayer/bedtime would be the most consistent time for us.  How much should we read?  Where should we start?  Well, we started at the beginning and read 3 verses a night.  Yes, 3 small verses.  I remember our first night, anticipating a family spiritual moment. We read the 3 verses and looked at each other like, "that was it?"  It seemed pointless.

200 + days later, reading 3 verses a night, we finished 1 Nephi. Finally.....

Some nights were great and others were not.  We learned that announcing "it's time for scriptures!" wasn't the best approach since Charlie would scream "noooooo!" because he knew scriptures = bedtime and he didn't want to go to bed.

I remember one night we came back late from somewhere.  Tony was probably putting Joey to bed and I was dealing with a very tired Charlie.  I pulled out the scriptures and not wanting to lose our spot as a family, I opened up and read the first 3 verses I saw.  As Charlie threw a tantrum I read, "...becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father."  I was laughing so hard I could barely get the words out.

Charlie's job from day 1 has been to get the scriptures out of his night stand, hand them to us, keep one for himself & put them away when we're finished.  He likes having a job.  We knew we were making an impression when Charlie started getting the scriptures out before we would ask.

We were proud when he could point out Christ, Joseph Smith, Samuel the Lamanite (his favorite) and Nephi on the boat from the pictures at the front of the book.

We decided we would celebrate completing each book in The Book of Mormon by having an ice cream party.  Monday night was our first ever scripture ice cream party.  The boys and I picked up waffle bowls, chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate syrup that morning at the store.

We talked about what we learned from reading.  Here is what has been true for us:

We read with small children to create a habit.

I know Charlie couldn't tell you about the liahona, tree of life or really anything in 1 Nephi.  However, I do know that he knows the scriptures are important to us.  He knows they talk of Christ because he hears His name in them.  He knows we read every night.

One day our kids will need to make decisions.  I hope they will choose the right, but they might not.  I hope they will come to us for help, but they might not.  We can't make decisions for them but we can teach them how to make decisions and this is best way I know.

Joey 6 Months

Joey had his 6 month appointment today!  Time is going by even faster than I remember it going with Charlie.  I hope it doesn't get quicker with each child because this time is so fun and I don't want to forget anything.

At 6 months Joey...

weighs 15 lbs. 15 oz. (25th percentile)
27 inches long (75th percentile)

He loves chewing on anything and everything, songs with hand actions, playing in front of the mirror, baths and being snuggled by mom or dad.

He isn't a big fan of baby food or laying on his back.  He wants to be sitting up or standing at all times.

He is a wonderful sleeper.  We swaddle him, lay him in his crib and he falls asleep on his own.  Angelic child.

He has an infectious belly laugh.  It comes most often when Charlie becomes the goofy entertainer.  Charlie jumps up and down, growls like a lion, all sorts of things. Once Joey starts laughing, they stare at each other and laugh at the other one laughing.

I love to rub his hair, smell his head and kiss his cheeks.

He is a happy baby with a sweet disposition.  I am so in love with him.

Life according to my camera

We are alive!  The boys have had colds and coughs while Tony and I had rounds with our annual stomach flu.  At least it hit before Christmas this year, right?

Here's a look at a few of the (fun) things we have been doing this month:

Crafts...I'm telling ya, everything turns into a weapon at this house

 hanging up snowflakes

Counting the Christmas tree lights...can you see us?
 playing in the mirror

sneaking into mom's nativities...

playing together: Joey loves to watch Charlie play.  Charlie loves to make Joey laugh by making weird noises and jumping on the bed.  It's fun to watch them together.

And yes, we manage to do all these things while maintaining a high level of personal style.

Christmas is four days away!  I can't believe it!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
